Don Buchwald Death: Superagent Don Buchwald,” famously known to every listener of “The Howard Stern Show” has passed away. The reputable father, husband, and businessman owned the Don Buchwald & Associates talent agency. Don Buchwald died on Monday, 22 July, 2024.
In a social media post, Tim Sabean confirmed the tragic news; “I lost my closest pal today… you left an iconic legacy… I miss you with all my heart and soul, my dear friend. Tim @buchwaldtalent.”
Who Was Don Buchwald?
Don Buchwald was born and raised in Brooklyn, as were his four siblings. His mother, a teacher, was the breadwinner for many years, while his father, who worked in the curtain industry, lived to be 100. At 16, he enrolled in Brooklyn College, hoping to become an actor, but he was concerned that it would be more of a hobby than a career. He dropped out of school in 1954 and joined the Army, where he was stationed in Korea after the war ended. He returned to college after a few years and graduated. (He has been a trustee of the Brooklyn College Foundation for 20 years and serves on the advisory board of the Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Steiner Studios.
Throughout the early 1960s, he worked in provincial theaters as a business manager and actor. (What type of acting? “Bad acting.” ) He discovered he had an aptitude for negotiating and began working as an agent for performers he met. He also worked as a travel agent specializing in honeymoons, making cold calls to baby boomers who were planning marriages. Many of his colleagues were voice-over artists who aspired to Broadway, radio fame, or even commercial work. He started representing them, too.
Buchwald founded his agency in 1977. His strategy was straightforward, and he has adhered to it. By the early 1980s, Mr. Buchwald had established himself as one of the leading agents for local radio and news talent. So, when Mr. Stern realized he needed more assistance than his lawyers could provide in managing his career, he contacted three agencies, Mr. Stern stated in the phone interview.
Mr. Buchwald has been a member of the Friars Club since 1972 and has served on its Board of Governors for several years. Most proudly, he has served on the Brooklyn College Foundation’s Board of Trustees for the past 20 years. He is the inaugural recipient of the Brooklyn College Theater Alumnus Award, the Alfred Drake Award, the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and, most recently, the Second Harvest Award.
The longtime showbiz agent Don Buchwald was described as a great man who lived up to all his dreams. Until his death, Buchwald lived in Manhattan with his wife Maggie in their famous mansion called “Bensonhurst”. They have two daughters and two grandsons. Age 77.
